Lent

This week we kicked off the liturgical season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. I LOVE Ash Wednesday service, as it gets me all fired up and ready for Easter. This year, Father suggested we use the 111 method when we are planning our Lenten sacrifice (something we do to prepare ourselves for Easter). He suggested working on 1 personality flaw, giving up 1 thing that hurts, and doing one thing to help ourselves spiritually. This year, as we have done for the passed 2 years, Forrest and I are giving up sweets. This is HARD. It isn't so hard at home, because we don't really keep desserts in the house, but it is hard at work and when we go out. I can think of so many dinners out and parties that are coming up this month and next and we will have to say "no thanks" when it is dessert time. However, the point is to give up something that is in fact a sacrifice so that we can learn and grow from it. When a client brings us a big plate of "thank you" chocolate chip cookies, I'll have to think about my sacrifice and maybe say a little prayer thanking Jesus for His. That's the whole point--to get into the Easter mindset--not to take pride in ignoring desserts for 40 days. It is being able to overcome yourself and personal desires and give yourself to God a little more rather than being attached to material (or in our case sugary) things. For the other 1's, I personally am going to work on my "flaw" every day, and we are both going to exercise at least 3 times a week for our "doing", and our exercise is going to remind us to pray, so that makes it spiritual. (My couch to 5k program fits perfectly into this plan!). We hope to not only get ourselves healthier physically but also spiritually during this time of preparation.
